Civista is currently and has always been adequately and safely staffed. The current staffing in the hospital meets or exceeds established staffing guidelines for hospitals in Maryland and all across the country. At no time has Civista ever jeopardized patient safety or quality of care.

When the nurses understood the hospital’s proposals presented during negotiations regarding staffing, market competitive salary and benefits, they could no longer support the strike called by the Union. The hospital exercised its lawful right and responsibility to hire highly skilled, experienced temporary nurses to cover all staff who chose not to work during the stoppage.

It is unfortunate that 1199 SEIU misled their membership, calling for a strike that was not supported, while claiming Civista acted irresponsibly. It is also disappointing that SEIU planned this action to occur during National Hospital and Nurses’ Week, a time when we celebrate our hardworking and dedicated staff for their many contributions. We are pleased that we will be able to continue this celebration without distraction. Civista remains committed to reaching an agreement with the nurses and moving forward.

Civista and the SEIU have been in bargaining sessions since December 2011 in an effort to come to agreement on a new three-year labor contract for registered nurses at Civista.

The hospital’s final offer was rejected by the Union Bargaining Committee on April 25, and a strike vote was called. Civista was issued a strike notification on April 27, 2012, before the voting was concluded.

Compensation for an average full time registered nurse at Civista is over $77,500 per year. Benefits include 30 days paid leave, comprehensive health benefits, as well as tuition assistance, among other things. A pension plan is also provided.

The offer proposed by Civista will increase nursing salaries by 9.75% over three years, with NO reductions in paid time off or other benefits or pension plan.

This offer is fair to Civista‘s registered nurses in that it keeps their compensation at or above market levels, as well as providing reasonable annual increases for the next three years.

While SEIU nurses may leave their patients, Civista will not. Preparation for highly qualified and trained traveling nurses to supplement staff have been completed. Civista Medical Center will be fully operational throughout this labor action.

The public should take note that the Sisyphus Field Training Exercise will simulate
the movement and treatment of mock victims to area hospitals. Residents should
anticipate additional helicopter traffic in the area. This exercise will not impact the
ability to be promptly seen at local hospitals, but people should be aware that they
will likely see mock victims dressed up to look like they have been severely injured,
hospital staff in personal protective equipment simulating the decontamination
process and hazmat vehicles. Please do not be alarmed; this is a planned
exercise to test the region’s capability to respond to a mass casualty scenario.

Civista will have blood pressure screenings and stroke education for the 5K participants before and after the race from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. As the day’s events continue, Civista will also provide FREE blood pressure screenings from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m.
