Civista Medical Center Earns Top Performer on Key Quality Measures from the Joint Commission

La Plata, September 21, 2012 – On Wednesday, September 19, 2012, Civista Medical Center was named one of the nation’s Top Performers on Key Quality MeasuresTM by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in America. Civista Medical Center was recognized for exemplary performance in using evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to improve care for certain conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care, children’s asthma, stroke and venous thrombo embolism, as well as inpatient psychiatric services.

Civista Medical Center is one of the top 18% of accredited hospitals in the U.S.-and one of only two in the state of Maryland-earning the distinction of Top Performers on Key Quality MeasuresTM for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance. Civista Medical Center was recognized for achieving excellence in performance on its accountability measures during 2011 for the following measure sets: Heart Failure, Pneumonia and Surgical Care.

Each of the top-performing hospitals met two 95 percent performance thresholds on 2011 accountability measure data. Each hospital achieved performance of 95 percent or above on a single, composite score that includes all the accountability measures for which it reports data to The Joint Commission, both including and excluding measures that had fewer than 30 eligible cases or patients. Each accountability measure represents evidence-based practice-for example, giving aspirin at arrival for heart attack patients, giving antibiotics one hour before surgery, and providing a home management plan for children with asthma.

“We understand what matters most to patients at Civista Medical Center is effective, safe care. That’s why Civista remains committed to the best patient outcomes through evidenced-based care processes.”  Says Mark Dumais, M.D., FACP, Chief Medical Officer, Civista Medical Center. “While we celebrate this recognition as the result of our commitment to our core values of teamwork, excellence and integrity, we always continue to work to find better ways to care for our patients.”

“We are proud to be named to the list of Top Performers on Key Quality MeasuresTM by The Joint Commission. This is the product of hard work and dedication by Civista’s employees, administration and medical staff. This is great news for Civista and for our entire community,” says Noel Cervino, Civista’s President & CEO.

In addition to being included in The Joint Commission’s annual report, Improving America’s Hospitals, Civista will be recognized on The Joint Commission’s Quality Check website. The Top Performer Program will be featured in the October issues of The Joint Commission Perspectives and The Joint Commission: The Source.
