A general practice doctor is a general practitioner who diagnoses, prevents and treats the most common diseases. A general practitioner is also called a family doctor, which is due to the fact that he treats both adult patients and children and has skills not only in therapy, but also in related narrow specialties, such as: dermatology, cardiology, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, neurology.

The general practitioner is engaged in examinations of patients, treatment, diagnostics: ECG, Holter, otoscopy, rhinoscopy, laryngoscopy, visualization of the fundus, measurement of eye pressure, gynecological examination, removal of sulfur plugs. Also, the family doctor makes diagnoses and conducts treatment, although he often refers patients to narrow specialists.

The field of activity of such a doctor extends not only to one patient, but also to the health of all members of his family.

The tasks that the general practitioner solves:
  • complete initial examination,
  • annual diagnostics,
  • carrying out all necessary medical procedures,
  • treatment and control of the treatment process.

If it becomes necessary to clarify the diagnosis or correct the treatment, the general practitioner refers the patient to a highly specialized doctor (for example, a gastroenterologist).

Also, a family medicine doctor is engaged in the prevention of various diseases - he conducts preventive examinations, gives advice on how to avoid the development of diseases.

A general practitioner (family medicine) doctor treats:
  • respiratory viral infections;
  • metabolic disorders;
  • atherosclerosis;
  • sharp fluctuations in weight;
  • weakening of immunity;
  • migraines and other headaches;
  • dyspeptic disorders;
  • urethritis of various origins;
  • dysbacteriosis;
  • dysuria;
  • poisoning and intoxication caused by various reasons.

What is the difference between a therapist and a general practice doctor?

Both specialties belong to the primary health care system, that is, they are doctors of first contact. The difference is in the breadth of competencies. The family doctor deals with the treatment and prevention of not only therapeutic pathology in adults. He accepts patients of all ages and understands related specialties (neurology, ENT, surgery, ophthalmology, and others). Of course, within the limits of their qualifications and in the case of a typical course of the disease.
