Milton Somers Middle School. The 3.1 mile course starts and finishes at
the school. Scenic route includes neighborhood streets surrounding Civista
Medical Center and downtown La Plata south of Charles Street. WHO? 1). Competitive and casual runners for 5K 2). Competitive and casual walkers for 5K 3). Fun and Family Walkers, not necessarily 5K 4). Wheelchair 5K Pre-registered runners
and walkers may pickup their packets at La Plata Town Hall, 5 Garrett
Avenue on Saturday, April 20 from 10:00 amÐ2:00 pm or at Milton Somers

Civista Health Foundation 6th Annual Run/Walk for Wellness

MD -- It was a record-breaking day
in many ways for the Civista Health Foundation on April 22, 2001. As the
sound of the start gun signaled the 6th Annual 5K Run/Walk for
Wellness, a record 310 participants left the starting line. And after the
last participants left Middle Somers Middle School, still another record
was made in that $16,000 had been raised from the event.
The weather was perfect for this annual event which attracted runners and walkers from Maryland, DC and Virginia, featured a 5K (3.1 mile) course through the streets of La Plata and around Civista Medical Center. Among the highlights of the event was 100 year old participant and Honorary Chairperson Ms. Fannie Weston. Fannie started the race, along with her friends and staff from Morningside House in Waldorf, and received the 'oldest walker' medal and a free pair of walking shoes, courtesy of Reebok. Top finishers and winners in various categories received medals and prizes courtesy of Golds Gym. More than 50 door prizes were distributed, including athletic equipment, free club memberships, sports tickets, specialty gift certificates, and other items. Event Chairman and Foundation Board Member Rick Bonifant commended the efforts of Race Director Tom O'Farrell and the event committee, which included Patti Bembe, Donna Clark, Linda Fitzgerald, Gretchen Heinze, Pete Perry, Gordon Schrader and Jim Wills. The Foundation is pleased to have raised more than $11,000 from corporate and individual sponsorships. The Foundation is grateful to 2001 Grand Sponsors Bank of America, Bonifant & Associates, F.I.T.
