Post-Race Awards Reception Held May 14 During National Hospital Week a reception to honor winners and participants of the 7th Annual Civista Health Foundation Run/Walk for Wellness was held on May 14 in the Civista Medical Center Lobby.
7th Annual 5K Run/Walk for Wellness raises $19,000 for Civista Health Foundation Despite a cold, soggy morning, success managed to "reign" once again for the Civista Health Foundation. The weather did not dampen the spirits of the record 335 participants who left the starting line as the sound of the start gun signaled the 7th Annual 5K Run/Walk for Wellness. And after the last participants left Middle Somers Middle School, still another record was made in more than $19,000 had been raised from the event. This annual event, which officially attracted 369 runners and walkers from Maryland, DC, Virginia and beyond, featured a 5K (3.1 mile) course through the streets of La Plata and around Civista Medical Center. Among the highlights of the event was recognition of Honorary Chairman and Hughesville resident Wardell Swann. An electrician and father of two, Swann suffered an illness that resulted in the loss of both legs below the knee and nearly all of his fingers. His spirit and pride shines through as Swann participates in numerous activities including karate, weightlifting and running. Later this month, Swann will compete in the 2002 International Challenge Athletics World Championships Qualifier in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Inclement weather forced the Foundation to postpone the post-event awards ceremony. The awards will be distributed at a reception on May 14 from 4-6 p.m. in the lobby of the hospital and will coincide with Civista's celebration of National Hospital Week. Top finishers and winners in various categories will receive medals and prizes courtesy of Golds Gym. More than 50 door prizes also are being distributed, including athletic equipment, free club memberships, sports tickets, specialty gift certificates, and other items.
