Diabetes Self-Management Program

Our program, for men and women, is recognized by the American Diabetes Association for Quality Self-Management Education.* The program is structured around two group classes and two individual sessions. Group classes are designed to enhance knowledge of diabetes in general and focus on the ADA core curriculum. Individual sessions include medical nutritional concepts, exercise testing and prescription, self-blood glucose monitoring, and insulin preparation and administration. This program is covered by most insurance plans, please contact Civista Women's Health Center directly to discuss insurance coverage and registration at 301.609.5200.

Expanded Childbirth Class

Classes are offered as a five-evening series, or a one-day Saturday class. We will prepare you and your support person for a safe and happy birthing experience. A tour of the Family Birthing Center is included. Our newly expanded classes now include getting to know your newborn. Register early, classes fill quickly.

Freedom from Smoking

Strength Training for Women

This ongoing class is for women only. You will be guided through 60 minutes of exercises designed to strengthen and tone muscles as well as increase flexibility. Participants will use dumbbells, resistance bands, and other exercise equipment to improve their muscular fitness. Barney O'Quinn, Fitness Instructor.

Finicky Kids, Frustrated Parents: Optimal dietary goals for the young child

This interactive class is for parents of children age 9 and under who may have questions about avoiding battles at the dinner table, children refusing to eat certain foods, uncertainties about protein and calcium needs for children, and appropriate portion sizes for different age groups. Developing good eating habits and healthy body image for children to take into adulthood is the main focus of the class. Class is for adults only. Instructor, Ann LeBarron, MS, RD, LD.

Breastfeeding Basics

Learn the basic information on breastfeeding including medical benefits, how to get started, what to prepare for before and after baby's birth, best nutrition, going back to work, options on pumps, bottles, and more. Treatment of Spinal Disorders

This presentation will address common spinal disorders (herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, and spinal stenosis), and more complex spinal disorders. Included will be common symptoms of back and leg pain, how patients are evaluated, and the different treatment options available. Techniques to be covered include physical therapy and medications, and newer, less invasive techniques. Baby Care

This comprehensive class now includes certification in both First Aid and CPR for infants and children. Also education and information on selecting car seats and cribs, babyproofing your home, and basic baby Care, i.e. bathing, diapering, and feeding. It is recommended that this seven-hour class be taken earlier in pregnancy for maximum comfort. This class is for expectant and new parents only.

Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) Screening

PVD is a condition of clogged or narrowed arteries in your legs or arms. It can be easily diagnosed using a special stethoscope to check blood pressure in your arms and legs. If you have leg or hip pain while walking or exercising; experience numbness, tingling or weakness in your legs; or frequently have cold legs or feet you may want to consider this screening.

AARP Driver Safety Class

Civista Health and AARP sponsor this classroom refresher course to help drivers 50 years of age or older address their skills and prevent traffic accidents. The course will cover age-related physical changes, declining perceptual skills, rules of the road, local driving problems, and license renewal requirements.

Aromatherapy

Learn what aromatherapy is and how it can enhance your health and well-being. This is a hands-on class in which participants will be able to explore the uses of pure essential oils through a variety of applications. Participants make an aromatherapy oil to take home. Class Cancellation and Refund Policy

There is a $10 nonrefundable administrative fee for all classes that require a payment. A full refund (minus the administration fee) will be issued for cancellations 72-hours prior to the initial class.

For Childbirth Classes a 50% refund (minus the administrative fee) will be issued after the first class if the enrollees wish to withdraw. No refund will be issued after the second class.

All Classes are subject to adequate class enrollment. You will be notified if a class is canceled or a starting date is changed. In case of inclement weather, we follow the Charles County Public Schools' policy regarding closings.
