This group includes patients with congestive heart failure (CHF), heart attacks (MI), coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG), PTCA or stents, valve replacement or repair, heart transplant, left ventricular assist device (LVAD) and stable angina. Together, members learn the skills that help manage their condition and improve their quality of life, take part in discussions and practice new skills. Some of the topics covered include: how blood pressure works, lowering secondary cardiac risk factors, exercise programs and understanding medicines and treatment.

The initiative features classes and events around diabetes at each of the 12 UMMS hospitals. During the week of November 12th Civista Medical Center will feature diabetic-friendly recipes, education and daily tips on their Facebook page.

On November 12 at 2:00 pm, Betsy Wolford, RD, CDE will host a lecture titled “Healthy Changes for People with Diabetes.” The lecture is free to the members of community and will focus on monitoring glucose levels, diet, exercise, medication and importance of monitoring A1C levels. The Waldorf Farmers’ Market was established in 2008 and is a producer-only market made up of a diverse group of vendors from the Southern Maryland region.

As of this season, market vendors will now accept credit, debit, and the USDA’s SNAP program (food stamp) payments. The market is the first in Southern Maryland to accept SNAP payments.

To help reduce the impact of heart disease on our community, Civista Health is proud to offer Heart Disease: Prevention, Diet & Risk Factors on Monday, June 4^th, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The class will focus on which risk factors for heart disease you can and cannot change, as well as the newest dietary guidelines for fats, fiber, and supplements. We will also look at lipid panel lab values and taste some plant-based foods.
