The Charles County colorectal cancer mortality rate is higher than the Maryland state average. Join us on Thursday, April 11th at 11:30 am for a special community education presentation on cancer of the colon.

This free event will feature a panel of experts in colorectal cancer screening, detection, and treatment. They will discuss risk factors,  screening recommendations, and the latest technologies available for treatment. Light refreshments will be provided.

This group includes patients with congestive heart failure (CHF), heart attacks (MI), coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG), PTCA or stents, valve replacement or repair, heart transplant, left ventricular assist device (LVAD) and stable angina. Together, members learn the skills that help manage their condition and improve their quality of life, take part in discussions and practice new skills. Some of the topics covered include: how blood pressure works, lowering secondary cardiac risk factors, exercise programs and understanding medicines and treatment.

Christmas Connection the largest Christmas program in Charles County includes five human service agencies that have combined their efforts to provide food and gifts for Charles County’s neediest families through donated funds, goods, and services. Annually 3000 children receive their Christmas toys, gifts, clothes and food through this program. The agencies involved are: Charles County Children’s Aid Society, Charles County Department of Social Services, and Department of Community Service Office on Aging, New Life Church, South Potomac Church and The Salvation Army Charles County Service Unit.

The initiative features classes and events around diabetes at each of the 12 UMMS hospitals. During the week of November 12th Civista Medical Center will feature diabetic-friendly recipes, education and daily tips on their Facebook page.

On November 12 at 2:00 pm, Betsy Wolford, RD, CDE will host a lecture titled “Healthy Changes for People with Diabetes.” The lecture is free to the members of community and will focus on monitoring glucose levels, diet, exercise, medication and importance of monitoring A1C levels.
