CIVISTA TO PROVIDE FREE PROSTATE CANCER SCREENINGS
Civista Health will again be providing prostate cancer screening exams
on September 18 and 19, 6:00 – 9:00 pm, in the Same Day Surgery
Department, South Tower, Civista Medical Center in La Plata.
Civista has been providing the free screenings to men in the community
for more than a decade, during which time more than 2,000 men have been
screened for prostate cancer. The exam consists of the PSA (prostate
specific antigen) blood test and DRE (digital rectal exam) given by
a trained medical professional.
Prostate cancer has nearly a 100 percent survival rate when detected
early, according to the Prostate Cancer Education Council. It is recommended
that men 40 and over receive the exams annually. If men fall into one
of the high-risk categories they should begin annual screening at age
35. High-risk categories include African-American males and men who
have a family history of the disease (father, brother, etc.).
Registration is required and may be made by calling Civista on the Line
at 1-888-332-4847. You will be given an appointment time. A form will
then be mailed to the registrant to be completed and brought in with
the registrant at the time of appointment. Actual screening exams take
approximately 10 minutes.
